Tour Overview

Experience the wild side of Maui on this small-group ocean safari to Molokini and beyond. Throughout our expedition we’ll be on the lookout for any opportunity to have an awe-inspiring encounter with Maui’s marine life. Breakfast, lunch, warm showers, private restrooms and cold Maui brews are included for your comfort on this epic adventure. Our vessel, Ocean Explorer, is purposefully designed to offer unimpeded views and high maneuverability to traverse the waters of Maui Nui with ease. The deck offers a low-to-the-water perspective, you’ll feel fully immersed in the experience when watching wildlife or approaching the scenic lava formations of Maui.

The itinerary changes daily based on ocean conditions to ensure that we are snorkeling at the best sites off Maui’s coast and at Molokini. In addition to Molokini we will seek a coastal snorkel site where turtles rest, feed and get their shells cleaned by reef fish. With 5 hours to explore, our route is carefully curated to maximize snorkeling opportunities, sight-seeing and wildlife searching. We may visit the dramatic backwall of Molokini crater, the most recent lava flows off Maui of the Ahihi-Kinau Reserve or other geological wonders of the volcanic formation, Haleakalā. While wildlife sightings or specific sites canʻt be guaranteed, we have the potential to see Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, dolphins, sharks, rays and seasonally, Humpback whales.

Please note as an intermediate to advanced adventure, this trip is not recommended for non-swimmers, pregnant women, people with heart conditions, neck, back, knee or mobility issues. Children under 7 are not permitted. Prepare for an unforgettable exploration of Mauiʻs oceanic wonders!

REEF SAFE SUNSCREEN POLICY

Maui County passed Ordinance No. 5306 that bans the sale, distribution and use of non-mineral sunscreens without a prescription in October of 2022. Research has shown that some chemicals in sunscreen can damage coral reefs such as disrupting coral reproduction, inhibiting growth, and impacting coral DNA (Downs et al., 2016). When buying sunscreen, it is important to read the ingredient list, as the term “reef safe” is not government regulated and can be used as a marketing device. Users should avoid sunscreens containing the following chemicals: oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, avobenzine, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene, and ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate. Also avoid using aerosol or spray-on products and opt for lotions instead. Choose sunscreen that contains zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients, as these have not been shown to damage coral.
